Act 159 SLH 2022, will now allow drivers ages 72 to 79 years old who are eligible for renewal or new license to receive an expiration date of four years effective January 1, 2023.  The cost of the four year license is $20.

Drivers 80 years old or older will continue to be eligible for a two year license only.

Expiration dates for legal immigrants age 72 years old - 79 years old will continue to expire no later than the licensee's authorized period of stay in the United States.

Act 159 SLH2022 does not apply to duplicate driver's licenses and commercial driver's licenses.

To apply for a new or renewal of your driver's license:

  1. Complete and print a driver license application (please bring application with you);
  2. Present original or certified copy of document(s) for proof of name and date of birth;
  3. Present original or certified copy of document(s) for proof of legal presence (proof of legal presence is not required for a limited purpose driver's license.);
  4. Present two (2) documents for proof of residence address (if your post office box is your mailing address, you must also bring in a document with your physical address listed);
  5. Complete and pass eye screening;
  6. A medical report may be required if you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to operate a vehicle with safety;
  7. Have a clear driving status on the National Driver Registry.

If you currently have a Real ID compliant driver's license with a gold star, documents for proof of name, date of birth, legal presence and residence address may not be required.  If you have any changes to your name or current address, you will need to provide documentation of name change and change of address.

If you are a legal immigrant and applying for a Real ID compliant driver's license with a gold star, you must provide your current immigration documents.

Refer to "List of Acceptable Documents".  You may renew six (6) months prior to expiration.
